The CCSDS 131.2-B-1 communication standard is an optimal solution for all the missions which require high data rate transmissions especially on variable link conditions (such as in LEO satellites). Its optimality derives from the bandwidth efficient, high data rate downlink; it exploits a considerable number of modulation formats (QPSK, 8-PSK, 16-APSK, 32-APSK and 64-APSK) in combination with Serially Concatenated Convolutional Code (SCCC) encoding. CCSDS 131.2-B-1 standard defines 27 different Modulation and Coding formats (ModCods), which can be used to optimize the link as a function of the link Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The 27 different combinations of modulation and coding formats allow Variable Coding and Modulation (VCM) and Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) techniques.
